During the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020, Thom Pierce travelled around South Africa with the writer Nomatter Ndebele, to photograph frontline healthcare workers in every province. 

The aim was to give a more complete picture of how each of the nine provinces were dealing with Covid-19, at a time where little was known about the reality on the ground. 

Doctors were photographed and interviewed in each province, along with a variety of others to represent the wide range of occupations that make up the primary healthcare system. 

In order to work safely, each of the participants was interviewed over the phone after the photographs were taken. At each location an outside photographic studio was built in order to maintain a safe, outside distance between subject and photographer.

The project was published in the launch issue of Daily Maverick 168 in September 2020.
